Frequently Asked Questions

1. What type of book does Entry Way (EW) publish?
Our writers’ genres range from poetry (EW’s first love) to children’s fiction and non-fiction, to real life experiences and moves on through the scope to encompass adventures of extreme sports and environmental opinions. Finally you’ll find mystery and intrigue writers of the dark and disturbing kind.

2. What type of books does EW not publish?
Recipe books, comic books and we do not work on projects that are x-rated or over the top adult content. Our environment has stayed true to the entire family being able to enjoy the books.

3. What type of publisher is EW?
Medium press publisher with 54 titles to date.

4. Is EW a print-on-demand publisher?
No. We pride ourselves in the fact that our authors always receive at least 25 books with their finalized agreement and often receive as many as 100. Several of our books have done well enough to warrant prints in the range of 2500. We try at all times to keep stock and be able to say ‘yes’ to purchasers. For books that are out of stock because of high demand and for books that are pre-orders, these prints can be obtained in as little as 2-3 weeks.

5. Does EW help authors to get their books on Amazon?
Yes – we also do Kindle uploads and publishing of all styles of e-books.

6. Does my manuscript need to be complete in order to start working with EW editors?
No. One of the differences between Entry Way and other medium press publisher is the fact that each writer receives 2-3 edit passes before their book is printed. That final set of eyes is more important to the future of the writer.

7. What does a review of my work cost?
All EW editors will be more than happy to provide a quality edit of your first chapter (or last if you prefer) at no charge. Along with the editor’s proofreading style edits, comes the publisher’s review of your writing, your writer’s habits are discussed and a critique of format “no-no’s” is provided. Be ready and be sure you want our opinion as our hearts are into helping to make the book a sellable product.

8. Do I need past experience or does it require me to have another published work?
No.

9. Has EW had a best-selling author with a current title?
Not as of today. However, we love each and every book we have published so much that we could easily sit down and re-read many of our books for the fifth time. The strange thing has been that even years later it would still be our decision to say ‘yes’ to almost every title we’ve finished. So really we do believe we will have a best-selling writer from our current crew. EW welcomes anyone who is a current best-selling author to join us. You’ll be glad you did.

10. What are some of the EW books that have sold well?
One Day As A Lion (Foster), BugsHollow (L. Phillips), Code 4 for Life (Hermanson), God Made Me in China (Rodriguez), A Children’s Christmas Duo and Heart-to-Heart (White), BeDoHave (M. Phillips), Splashdown (Wolfram), Rocky Traverse and Wild for Alaska (Dixon), as well as Rest in Peace Rural America (Ciancio).

11. What is the highest number of books you have published for one author?
Seven – Elga Haymon White (this number does include e-books and activity books).

12. What genre is selling best now?
Children’s books.

13. What makes Entry Way different than other companies?
We work one-on-one, almost any day and at almost any hour to not only produce the book they have written, we work with them to produce even more seasoned writers out of them. Our writers return to us with the second, third and fourth book. Plus we have writers that have learned that there is much more to do at Entry Way besides writer…and miracles happen all along the way.

14. Why have you written a manuscript, children’s book or a book of poetry?
Do you want to a) sell your book to family, friends, and colleagues or b) market the book on a national level? If your first response is “a,” then self-publishing is for sure the way to go. For “b” answers, self-publishing can still be your answer. This will provide you with short runs of your book 25-500 books and these can be then sold to family, friends, colleagues and some of the copies can be used to seek out the traditional publisher you may dream your book deserves. After publishing with Entry Way we will help you by either getting an agent, querying a traditional small press, or a combination of both. You can re-publish a self-published book by changing the name of the book, some of the text, getting a new ISBN number (that’s another article), and finding the right traditional press. Self-publishing is much faster than waiting for the traditional publisher’s inbox to produce a response and it is easier. Traditional publishing will take a year or more, in order to line up book reviewers, have them read and write reviews, and submit the information to publications, such as Publishers Weekly.

15. Is my book salable?
This question is probably the one authors spend the least amount of time thinking about, yet it appears to be the most important question of all. You will need outside opinions from professionals in the field—not your best friend’s sister. Even though we certainly encourage you to listen to what they have to say; we also will provide you that professional opinion. All authors believe their book is salable. The truth is, many are not. For those who hire an agent to represent them, a major publishing house will accept only 2%, while 98% are rejected. Those odds aren’t very encouraging. Yet, Steven King beat them and so did the author of the Harry Potter series™once her manuscript was retrieved from the trash. The good news is we will with a free review of your first chapter give you an assessment of if you should look toward being a writer with a book that sells.

16. How will your finished book be marketed?
Entry Way goes beyond the average self-publishing company and is not a vanity-press company in that we always do marketing with the books we publish. For writers seeking a marketing package we not only will study your genre, we do a swat analysis as well. We’ll do everything we can to cause the public to know your book exists because we know without the proper marketing potential purchasers will simply stay potential. Once the publishing fee is set a marketing package is also explained.

17. Who is my audience?
You must know to whom you are selling or marketing. A traditional publisher won’t take you on as an author, if a large enough audience for the book doesn’t exist. Though Entry Way does their research and will know your audience, they will also realistically let you know if there is not a market at this time for your book.

18. What is my budget and which is the best way to go?
Our self-publishing packages are all fine-tuned to fit your needs. Though we have set fees, at all times we will talk with you and work a special program to fit your manuscript and current life situation. There are many other self-publishing companies that can run an author into four figure costs, but at Entry Way all fees are reasonable and can be paid out in as many as four payments.

19. Is my book returnable to the distributor?
Big bookstores like Barnes and Noble, B Dalton, Walden Books and Borders order through distributors, not the publisher. The main distributors in the United States are Baker and Taylor and Ingram. For bookstores to consider stocking your book, they must be able to order through the distributor and return through the distributor. Digi-Tall Media – www.digi-tall-media.com is our distributor and the mother company of all our Entry Way arms.

If the bookstore can't sell your book to the public, they want the option of packaging up the books and sending all the ones that didn't sell back to one location.

20. Are you printing a run on my books or are they Print-on-Demand?
Your publishing package will come with a short run of books with the option to add as many copies as you would like at really low rates. EW does not charge large amounts of money for copies of the books. We also do not print on demand one at a time. Our reputation is important to us as is your’s – therefore we always try to have books available. Also, Print-on-Demand carries a stigma that bookstores aren’t crazy about. They will be more interested in hosting events and stocking your title if your books are printed in a run. This is also why we order books that Entry Way keeps for your signings and for Amazon/marketing tools.

21. What will my cover price be?
Upon completion of the book alley, you will be sent information that will provide you the cost per book from run sizes: 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000 and up if needed. After the cost of printing the book is determined, we usually double that cost and come close to that for the price that your book will be charged to the public. The more books ordered, the less they cost per book. Now go to your local bookstore and find books in your genre that is the same binding (hardcover or paperback) and have the same number of pages. What are those cover prices? If there's a difference of 10-20%, you're still in a competitive range. If your book is double or triple the price of similar books in the bookstore, your publisher thinks you aren't going to sell many books and they are jacking up the cover price to increase their profits.

If you want to be a best seller, run away from jacked up prices. If you just want to sell to family and friends, this is okay if your friends and family are comfortable financially.

22. Are you going to charge me for editing?
Entry Way prides themselves in their editing skills and will always send a free sample of our work. All of us onboard are also published writers who care about the written word and that your book sells. Most publishing packages include 2-3 rounds of edits by more than one set of eyes.

23. Where will my book be advertised?
This issue is covered in the contract but always includes our websites as well as Amazon, online bookstores, book stores that cover your genre.

24. What will the quality of my finished product be?
Excellent, and we have plenty of titles to prove this fact. We will send you e-mail addresses of our authors to ask them how they have enjoyed our services and their book.

25. How long until I see my book in print?
This is a big tell about the size and status of the publisher. 3-9 months depending upon the size of the book and how well the editing and galley production go between the editors and the authors and the designers.
